The Easy Way to Help Your Baby’s Plagiocephaly or Brachycephaly

by Lem Bach

You’ve heard the diagnosis. It’s plagiocephaly or brachycephaly. And now it’s easy to worry about the future for your precious baby—or feel you could have done something to prevent it.

But we have a reason not to stress, not to get overwhelmed. It’s a way we can help your baby’s head shape. We’ve used 10,000 points of data to make sure of our design.

It’s called Sprout3D™. It’s Surestep’s most innovative design yet, a lightweight, comfortable helmet that gently guides your infant’s cranial growth.

We designed it for your baby’s comfort—and to be easy for parents to use. You can even open and close it with one hand while you’re holding your baby!

What Is Sprout 3D?

Cranial asymmetries in infants are common. About 20% of babies have them at some point. Usually, it’s one of these diagnoses:

  • Plagiocephaly: The skull develops a flat spot on one side or the other, creating left-to-right asymmetry
  • Brachycephaly: The back of the head is flattened, which widens the sides and, sometimes, the forehead

What does Sprout3D do? Cranial asymmetry happens because infants’ skulls are soft, growing, and easy to shape. Well, they can be corrected in the same way through a cranial remolding orthosis (CRO). This is how:

  1. Sprout3D gently touches the head where we don’t want additional fullness to occur
  2. It leaves space where we want growth to occur for reshaping
  3. The custom design gently guides growth over several months until the head shape is corrected

Why It’s Comfortable and Easy to Use

We’ve put special features into this helmet to make the treatment easier on you and your baby:

  • 3D Printing for a Precise Fit: 3D printing makes each helmet fit just right, snug and comfortable on your baby’s head. This helps prevent skin irritation, minimize rotation, and make treatment more effective.
  • Lighter Weight: 3D printing lets us make it 20% lighter than traditional designs. Is that a lot? To a baby learning to hold their head up, yes! We literally lessen the burden of CRO use for you and your baby.
  • All-New Latch System (Great for Parents!): After seeing parents struggle when putting on and taking off helmets, we created a new hinge-and-latch system. You can open and close the helmet with one hand, even lowering your child into it.
    • Note: A traditional CRO is a single, closed piece. Parents have to hold a baby upright while pushing the helmet down over their head with both hands

  • Great Ventilation: New cutouts, or “trim lines,” on the top of the helmet are bigger, giving lots of airflow to keep the head cooler. Less sweating feels great for babies.
  • Color Variety: We have six beautiful dyes, so can make your baby’s helmet look the way you want! Right now, we offer light grey, black, royal blue, and purple. Coming soon: peony pink and dark green! Ask your clinician for the available colors.

We even tested several types of fasteners to find one that makes only a small, gentle sound next to your baby’s ear. Remember, your orthotist will also show you how to use Sprout3D, so you can focus on these precious early months of your kiddo’s life.

Quick Treatment With Sprout3D

Does this take a long time? Cranial remolding usually takes 3–4 months. Your orthotist can give you a more specific prediction based on your child’s age and head shape.

Probably the biggest factor to fast results, though? Sticking to the wear schedule from your orthotist!

And parents are pretty consistent with Sprout3D, because their baby is comfortable, and it’s easy to open, clean, and put back on again.

Does a CRO Use Pressure to Reshape the Head?

Does Sprout3D put pressure on the head, like dental braces? Not at all! It’s a passive device. It guides head growth that was already going to happen.

How? The inside of the helmet gently contacts certain areas to curb growth while also leaving void areas to encourage growth for reshaping.

This channels natural head growth along the path of least resistance toward a symmetrical head shape. And it’s based on decades of orthotic experience.
