Facilitating Function: Through Effective Orthotic Intervention and Follow Up

Course Description:

Did you know it takes several years of heel-toe walking patterns to develop the arches of the foot? However, parents often look for immediate changes in their child’s foot structure after receiving their SMOs. This 2-hour interactive webinar focuses on recognizing early benefits of dynamic SMOs and how we can better communicate these benefits to our patients’ families and care-team through a developmental lens by utilizing pediatric developmental goals. We will review how to determine and communicate when kids have outgrown and/or graduated from their SMOs not only by evaluating fit but by assessing progress towards developmental goals including improvements in trunk posture, transitional skills, single limb balance tests and gait development. We will review ways to track outcomes and share these benefits with families along the way to improve compliance and participation.

Objectives:

  • Understand typical gross motor skill development in children
  • Review developmental goals for pre-ambulators, early walkers, and community ambulator
  • Explain benefits of Surestep SMOs and its modifications versus alternative options
  • Review simple language to use with families to encourage compliance and participation
