Surestep, LLC, Gains PDAC Approval for Stabilizer Product HCPCS Codes

L1940, L2280, L2820, L2330 Officially Approved for Insurance Billing

South Bend, IN, December 21, 2021—Today, Surestep, a manufacturer of custom orthotics for children and adults, announced that their new adult Stabilizer product has earned approval for four HCPCS codes from PDAC (the Pricing, Data Analysis, and Coding contractor for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services).

More than 25% of Americans aged 65+ fall down each year, according to the CDC. The Stabilizer is a custom orthotic that prevents and solves adult balance problems. Patients wear it under their favorite shoes, reducing their risk of falling and restoring foot and ankle function.

The Stabilizer helps patients with muscle weakness, muscular incoordination, abnormal gaits, pain or instability of the ankle and foot, osteoarthritis, and other conditions. Including a molded inner boot and open heel design, the Stabilizer restores patients’ proprioception, or sense of position and movement.

In a clinical case study, patients aged 24 to 78 who used the Stabilizer experienced a greatly improved gait and a more stable stance while walking. Their risk of ankle sprains was reduced, their upper extremities were more relaxed, and their weight shifted more naturally while walking.

“We are proud to be able to offer a low-profile brace that can provide a better quality of life for people who are at risk of falling,” says Bernie Veldman, founder and CEO of Surestep.

PDAC reviewed two varieties of Surestep Stabilizer products—with laces or with Velcro—and verified codes L1940, L2280, L2820, and L2330.

Gaining PDAC code verification involves a standardized process. A manufacturer submits a product, and PDAC’s team of experts review it, along with related materials. If they approve the product for certain billing codes, they send an official letter to the manufacturer detailing the decision and codes. They also list the product and codes on the PDAC website.

A clinician can order a custom Stabilizer for a patient by submitting the adult braces measurement form found on Surestep’s website and a cast or a scan in .stl, .imed, or .obj format.

Surestep manufactures custom orthotics at their headquarters in South Bend, Indiana, selling to orthotic and prosthetic providers throughout the US and in more than 40 countries worldwide. Their diverse selection of orthotic bracing grants stability and function in children and adults. The company was founded 22 years ago on their passion to serve children who need developmental assistance, enriching their quality of life.
